Why Counselling Matters to Me

My route into counselling has been shaped not only by professional training, but by life experience.

Over the years, I have experienced many of the transitions that can change how we see ourselves and our place in the world.

I understand, too, that experiences such as health difficulties and menopause can affect much more than our physical wellbeing. Change can sometimes leave us questioning our confidence, identity, relationships or sense of purpose.

These experiences don't mean that I will assume I know how you feel. Your experiences are your own.

But they do help me appreciate that life can change unexpectedly — and that sometimes having someone alongside us while we find our way through can make a real difference.

My Experience

My work with frontline services has given me valuable experience and insight into trauma, crisis and resilience. I have also received a volunteer award recognising my commitment and contribution to that work.

As a counsellor, I have supported people experiencing workplace anxiety, loss and grief, and the effects of trauma and difficult experiences.

I also work with people experiencing anxiety and panic, low mood, stress and overwhelm, low confidence and self-esteem, relationship difficulties, loneliness, bereavement, workplace stress and burnout, health-related changes and significant life transitions.

But you don't need to fit neatly into one of those categories to come to counselling.

Sometimes the starting point is simply:

"I don't feel like myself anymore."

And that's enough.

My Approach to Counselling

As an Integrative Counsellor, I don't believe one approach fits everybody.

You are an individual, with your own experiences, circumstances and reasons for seeking counselling. Our work together will therefore be shaped around you.

Counselling provides a confidential space where we can explore your experiences collaboratively, based on trust and mutual respect. It isn't about me giving you advice, and no particular outcome can or should be guaranteed.

Sometimes our work might involve exploring what has happened in the past. At other times, we may concentrate on what's happening for you now and finding ways of managing things that feel overwhelming.

Most importantly, we work at your pace.

Perhaps We Could Start With a Conversation

Choosing a counsellor can feel like a big decision, and I don't expect you to know whether I'm the right person for you simply from reading my website.

That's why I offer a free 20-minute introductory call.

It gives us an opportunity to talk briefly about what has brought you to counselling, for you to ask questions, and for us both to consider whether working together feels right.

I understand the pressures that can come with demanding and target-driven workplaces, changing career later in life and redundancy. I have also experienced bereavement and the loss of much-loved pets, alongside the changes that come as children grow up and leave home, grandchildren arrive and life begins to look different from the way it once did.
